Day 5

Day 5
September 12

Today we rode from Elgin Oregon to Farewell Bend State Park, Oregon.  The total mileage was 116 miles making it one of the longest days of the journey.  Riding that kind of distance right after riding 106 miles the day before was tough.  The morning weather began cool and beautiful as we rode through eastern Oregon farm and ranch  country stopping for lunch in the picturesque town of Baker City, Oregon.  A major, multi-day Oregon Cycling event called Cycle Oregon was starting the next day in Baker City so the town was full of cyclists. The afternoon was hot as we left Baker City and began the long slow climb over a low pass. We knew the  day would be long but the afternon headwind made it an especially, hard afternoon.  We finally rolled into our camp for the night at Farewell Bend State Park at dark - a total of 12 hours on the bike.  Dinner and early bed time.
